‘Natural’ Skincare?
If you are looking for good quality skincare products by asking if the products or ingredients are ‘natural’ it probably means that you are asking the WRONG question. Lots of natural substances are good, but lots are also bad & lots I certainly wouldn’t want to rub on my skin!
Natural does not mean safer or better. ‘Natural’ is not a regulated term and doesn’t tell you anything about whether a product is likely to be good or bad for you. People are generally confused (probably coz of all the noise out there) and come to the simplified conclusion that natural = good and chemicals = bad. Everything is made of chemicals. Humans are made of chemicals. Toxic chemicals in nature include things like arsenic, snake venom, lead, VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Even oxygen, a naturally occurring chemical that we need to live, can be toxic at a very high dose. Natural substances are just substances that occur in nature. We can identify a chemical substance by its specific properties. For example, water is a chemical made up of hydrogen and oxygen. These substances can then interact with other substances and change form. Chemicals get into our bodies through our SKIN, the things we eat and drink, and the air we breathe.
A better question to ask might be… Are the ingredients compatible with our physiology? Are they going to help me or hurt me? I see lots of adverts promoting their ‘natural’ skin care products, but when you look at the ingredients they are full of things like grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, sweet almond oil etc. They come from natural sources so it’s probably correct to call them ‘natural’. Would I rub them on my skin? Hell no! I often talk about PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids, mostly linoleic acid) and how bad it is for us and our physiology. Here’s the contents of linoleic acid in the above-mentioned ‘natural’ oils: Grapeseed oil ~70%, sunflower oil ~44-75%, safflower oil ~75%, and sweet almond oil ~25-30%. It particularly hurts my soul when I see parents leaving reviews about how they use these products on their children’s skin 😭
My products are 100% ‘natural’ of course, but more importantly they are compatible with our physiology and actually support our metabolisms instead of actively tearing them down. All my products are made and sent out in to the universe with love & understanding 🥰 Things I’m sure we can all use a little more of! 😜
Lots of love,
